Film made darkness expensive, so you learned to respect it. Digital made darkness cheap, so people forget. AI makes darkness optional, and that is the final insult: "We'll relight it later." Synthetic shadow often looks like a clever lie.
Look at Horst: sculpted bodies, controlled negative space, a patience that feels imperial. Look at Newton: hard edges, deliberate threat, shadows like moral statements. Different sensibilities, same backbone: darkness used intelligently.
